CIYOTA STUDENTS'S HOSTELS

Why the Hostel
Lack of access to quality education for children in Kyangwali refugee settlement, Hoima district and other under-privileged rural communities in Uganda. Education is the key to putting one's potentials to maximum use. Education serves as the means to bring about the desired change in society; an individual who had access to education is an important tool in the long-term eradication of poverty and general community development. Educated adults tend to marry later in life, have healthier children, and be more productive at work. Education is the reason why rich and developed nations of the world have very high literacy rates and productive human resource.
The schools in Kyangwali Refugee Settlement in Uganda, which hosts 23,000 refugees, are inadequate due to lack of teachers and resources, and it is very expensive to attend schools outside the settlement. We are young refugees living and actively participating in this community, and we also struggled for education.
About the Hostel
COBURWAS has two hostels, one for boys and another for girls. We have students from Upper primary to High secondary school level. Currently we have 50 girls and 45 boys.
We are increasing access to quality education by opening student hostels near the best schools in the region. By providing accommodation and food to children from surrounding areas that would otherwise attend inadequate schools, we remove geographic barriers to education. Students who stay at the hostels benefit from a strong sense of community and mutual support.
Hostel Innovation
By working out personal payment plans, we also remove economic barriers; some students will pay full fees to live at the hostel, while others will contribute only what they can afford in fees and food. Even full fees are less than the current cost of attending school.
By renting hostels in Hoima, a town 80 miles from the settlement, we enable students to access better schools. Most of our students receive free education at schools offering universal secondary education, a government initiative that hasn't reached rural communities like Kyangwali. We provide students with accommodation, food and scholastic materials. Without set fees for the hostel, students pay what they can afford, which is less than normal school fees.
